Avaya continues to drive itself deeper into the unified communications realm. The company announced it has acquired Sipera, a UC company with a laser focus on UC security. Sipera technology will be completely assimilated into Avaya, so what assets will Avaya be SIP-ing up? Here’s the scoop …

Avaya has been on the prowl for “fit-for-purpose, enterprise-class SBC capabilities” that mesh well with SIP trunking and other demanding UC needs. Turns out, Sipera — which was a Platinum member of the Avaya DevConnect program — had exactly that, and some more. Sipera, like Avaya, has a solution portfolio that integrates nicely with both standards-based UC networks as well as open solutions.

The standard gamut of communication tools are also available from Sipera, including videoconferencing, cloud UC, presence and IM and good, old-fashioned VoIP. But Sipera’s claim to fame is the “application-layer security,” which makes it easier to work remotely while being connected to the UC infrastructure without the need for a VPN. That technology exists in the form of Sipera’s “Borderless UC.”

The Sipera acquisition has been given a resounding ring of approval by distributor Westcon Group. In an official statement, Westcon saidt:

“On a market level, it dramatically lowers the cost of entry for companies looking to deploy advanced SIP UC applications and protocols. This will fuel interest and expand the ability for companies to leverage SIP technology. For Avaya partners, this means reduced time-to-value for those selling advanced Aura-based solutions. The acquisition will also dramatically lower the OPEX costs for those interested in managing and provisioning secure remote working.”

Westcon recently added Avaya’s VSP lineup to its UC networking portfolio, and Avaya has also found love with partners through Jenne Inc., a VAD that provides personalized training to partners. Avaya partners may want to take advantage of Sipera technology to reach previous untapped UC market opportunities. Meanwhile, keep your eyes on Siemens and Polycom as the heat gets turned up in the UC arena.
