Two things you should know: This week saw the release of version 9.0 of open source database PostgreSQL and EnterpriseDB has announced support for it. New to PostgreSQL 9.0 is 64-bit Microsoft Windows support, built in replication, and hot standby. Here’s the lowdown.

EnterpriseDB has made a name for itself by packaging PostgreSQL services and support for, well, enterprises. Their Postgre Plus solution takes the open source code at the root of the project and puts a proprietary spin on it — they see themselves as low-cost competition with Oracle. In an immediate sense, they provide a one-click PostgreSQL installer.

The full PostgreSQL press release has all the details on version 9.0. But the highlights include the aforementioned 64-bit Windows support and the replication and hot standby features needed for failover architectures required in cloud computing. What’s more, it introduces in-place upgrading from older PostgreSQL databases.

While The VAR Guy caught some heat for referring to EnterpriseDB’s offerings as open source, there’s no denying they’re doing interesting things in the business space. Watch The VAR Guy for more.
