HP Unveils Mobile Device Portfolio for Enterprise, Key Verticals
Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) is setting its sights squarely on the enterprise mobility market with the release of a new portfolio of tablets, hybrids and ElitePads designed for the mobile workforce. The company also introduced several products built specifically for mobile workers in the healthcare, field services, retail and education markets as the hardware giant looks to provide customers with customized solutions for major verticals.

HP’s new 11.6-inch tablet is the company’s solution to a traditional desktop, with a footprint meant to fit comfortably on an airplane tray table. Park said the device was built with the coach-class traveler in mind, with a magnesium alloy casing for durability and Wacom digitizer for optional pen use. The Elite x2 is also compatible with both a snap-on travel keyboard or a more rigid keyboard with its own power supply, so users can run their device for up to 10.5 hours on a single charge, according to HP.

The ProTablet 408 is an 8-inch tablet being billed as an option for “value-conscious” enterprise users, according to Park. The device was designed in partnership with Microsoft (MSFT) and runs Windows Pro on an Intel Atom processor.

The Pro Slate models come in both 8-inch and 12-inch flavors and are the first commercial Android products on the market, according to HP. Each device is outfitted with a 4:3 ratio screen (the size of a standard sheet of paper) and should provide users with an estimated 12 hours of battery life on a single charge. However, the most interesting facet of the Pro Slate devices is the HP Duet Pen, a stylus designed in collaboration with Qualcomm that uses ultrasonic triangulation to determine the X and Y coordinates for handwriting on the screen. The stylus includes a feature that will allow users to write on a piece of paper with the pen while simultaneously transcribing the information digitally on the tablet.

The HP ElitePad 1000 G2 Healthcare tablet includes several features specifically for healthcare professionals, including an antimicrobial treatment to kill bacteria and an internal smart card reader along with a 2D scanner for patient records.

The ElitePad 1000 G2 Rugged Edition is designed for outdoor use and can sustain a drop from up to 7 feet, according to HP. The rugged tablet is also dust- and water-resistant, with an internal smart card reader, 2D barcode scanner and an estimated 20-hour battery life.

The HP Retail Case will allow for on-the-go point-of-sale transactions with customizable third-party payment options such as MSR, EMV and NFC, according to HP. The case also includes a hand strap with the ability to turn the device into a fixed POS with an optional dock.

HP is rolling out the Pro Slate 10 EE G1 for schools looking to provide tablets for K-12 students. The Slate 10 runs on Android and features a beveled design to prevent screens from scratching on tabletops. The Slate 10 also includes an attached pen and can be equipped with a detachable keyboard that is powered by the tablet itself, so administrators don’t have to worry about separately configuring the keyboards for each device.

HP unveiled its eight new enterprise products during a press event in Manhattan, where executives showed off the new devices and emphasized HP’s continuing dedication to delivering mobile solutions designed from the ground up for enterprise workers.
“Mobility for businesses isn’t just a device plus an app or adopting BYOD scenarios; it’s about organizations using purpose-built devices and industry-specific solutions that have the power to transform both the workplace and business workflows,” said Michael Park, vice president and general manager, Commercial Mobility and Software, Business Personal Systems, in a statement.
