Cook: Working in the office of my parents business. I did payroll and general accounting office work on IBM system 36, which was my first exposure to computers and programming. The consultant was an IBM VAR and inspired me to pursue computer science in college.
The VAR Guy says: Not bad for a first job! It’s always good to know that first jobs have the potential to spur meaningful careers.
Cook: A Maserati
The VAR Guy says: A beautiful choice, but expensive: a car like this rarely ever leaves the dealership for under $100,000.
Cook: South America-Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls and Rio de Janeiro. A great trip with friends where we enjoyed the sites, culture and food.
The VAR Guy says: This sounds like a great trip. We’re still waiting for our souvenirs.
Cook: “Unbroken” by Laura Hillenbrand. What an unbelievable story of strength and perseverance!
The VAR Guy says: “Unbroken” is the story of WWII veteran Louis Zamperini, who spent more than two and a half years as a prisoner of war in a Japanese POW camp. The book was recently turned into a motion picture directed by Angelina Jolie, so now you can see your favorite inspirational story on the big screen!
Cook: Jewelry… A girl can’t have enough bling!
The VAR Guy says: Business-savvy and fashionable—certainly a powerful combination.
Cook: “Scandal”
The VAR Guy says: “Scandal” is an award-winning drama starring Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope, a crisis management firm owner. The show is loosely based on Judy Smith, a former George H.W. Bush administration press aide.
Cook: A doctor or nurse.
The VAR Guy says: A good choice, for sure, and another popular dream career for kids everywhere.
Cook: “Gone with the Wind.” Scarlett O’Hara learns the ultimate lesson … You get what you give!
The VAR Guy says: This 1939 epic won an Academy Award for Best Picture, and clocks in at nearly four hours long. Bring extra popcorn for this one!
