Maffei: My first job out of school was working for a division of SBC selling mobile telephony solutions through both B2B and B2C channels. Like so many of my peers today, this was your classic entry-level door-knocking, phone-dialing job looking to drum up attention and opportunity in a crowded market. I learned a lot—not the least of which was learning how to hear ‘no’ and ‘go away’ from potential customers and how to turn those from negatives into positives.
The VAR Guy says: This reminds us a lot of the typical journalist’s experience. The best ones—both journalists and salespeople—never take ‘no’ for an answer.
Maffei: A Maserati Quattroporte
The VAR Guy says: This luxury sports car can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds with its 404 HP twin-turbo V6 engine.
Maffei: This past April I took my family to Turks and Caicos. It was our second time to the gorgeous island.
The VAR Guy says: Turks and Caicos are British Overseas Territories located in the Lucayan Archipelago. The islands host an annual Turks & Caicos Music and Cultural Festival, which has featured Alicia Keys, Billy Ocean and Lionel Richie, to name a few.
Maffei: There is a book by a gentleman by the name of Rory Vaden called, “Take the Stairs.” I agree with some, not all, of the principles in the book—but the underlying meaning of ‘You get what you hustle for’ rings through loudly.
The VAR Guy says: “Take The Stairs” is Vaden’s popular tell-all about the powers of self-discipline and how to succeed in a world where we’re constantly tempted to procrastinate, compromise and turn in mediocre work amidst the fast pace of technology-driven businesses.
Maffei: This past Halloween I went out to buy a costume to wear with my kids trick-or-treating. I came home with a red angry birds costume and a brand new Acura; I was not in the market for a new car.
The VAR Guy says: Wow, talk about impulse buying! How a Halloween costume purchase turned into a new car purchase is something I’m sure many of us want to know …
Maffei: Seinfeld has been, and always will be, the only show I will consider myself addicted to. Whether I have seen an episode once or 30 times, when it is on, life stops.
The VAR Guy says: Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer helped to define the ’90s sitcom era with classic episodes like “The Puffy Shirt,” “Yada Yada Yada,” and, “The Soup Nazi.” No soup for you!
Maffei: I wanted to go to law school and become a professional sports agent. This is still a dream of mine that I would consider on the table.
The VAR Guy says: Representing the rich and famous would definitely be an interesting job change. It’s never too late to try something new!
Maffei: My father introduced me to “Rocky,” when I was very young (younger than he probably should have, if you ask my mom), but there is something about “Rocky IV,” that will forever stand out in my mind as a reminder of my childhood winters and the motivation that can be drawn from the story, training scenes and the fight itself. If you can’t get up for “Rocky IV,” someone should check you for a pulse.
The VAR Guy says: Yo, Adrian! “Rocky,” is a great movie series. If only training for a boxing match in real life were as simple (and stylish) as a Rocky-style training montage.
