Barsamian: Checkout clerk at the grocery store. Everyone should do a retail job at some point – it’s eye-opening.
First job after college: I entered AT&T’s MDP program (Management development program). AT&T had 1 million employees at the time, so nothing has seemed too big or complex since then.
The VAR Guy says: We agree about retail being a life-altering experience; it’s certainly something you never forget.
Barsamian: My dream car is a bike!
The VAR Guy says: Very cool! As a rule, the VAR Guy only rides in vehicles with four wheels, for safety’s sake (other people’s safety, of course).
Barsamian: Two weeks in China last summer – fabulous family trip.
The VAR Guy says: The VAR Guy has friends who recently visited The Great Wall – the pictures were breathtaking. We can only wonder what it would be like to experience it firsthand.
Barsamian: “Boys in the Boat” by Daniel James Brow – An inspiring story about the power of teams and beating the odds. I also like “Younger Next Year” by Chris Crowley and Henry S. Lodge – A great manual for living healthy.
The VAR Guy says: “Boys in the Boat” is the true story of the U.S. Men’s Olympic Crew team and their race toward the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
“Younger Next Year” provides readers with several tips and tricks to help them lead healthy lives and feel young even in their 50s and 60s.
Barsamian: A getaway weekend in L.A. with my sister and daughters.
The VAR Guy says: We hope you got to see all the famous tourist sites, like the Hollywood sign and Grauman’s Chinese Theater during your trip!
Barsamian: Sherlock (the Benedict Cumberbatch U.K. version) and Homeland.
The VAR Guy says: Sherlock is a highly acclaimed BBC series and a modern retelling of Scotland Yard’s most deadly and intellectual investigator, while Homeland is a tense story of CIA espionage and the men and women who protect America’s borders from terrorism.
Barsamian: Broadcast journalist (watching Jane Pauley) and civil engineer (building bridges seemed very tangible to me).
The VAR Guy says: Did you ever consider being a broadcast journalist who exclusively covers civil engineering projects? This could be a “two birds with one stone” type of career.
Barsamian: “Inception,” with Leonardo DiCaprio. I have watched it four or five times and am still not sure I have figured it out.
The VAR Guy says: Christopher Nolan is truly the master of mind-bending cinema. We are still waiting to see his latest movie, “Interstellar,” which also looks amazing and very complex.
