With spring around the corner in North America, it seemed like the right time for SpringSource to ‘spring’ into action make their big announcement. SpringSource is unleashing SpringSource Server Spring Edition as “the best place to build and run Spring applications.” There’s a free promotion involved. Plus, this is the first time SpringSource will be offered through the VMware channel. Here’s the skinny…
If you were wondering, SpringSource is a division of VMware. SpringSource toots their horn, calling themselves the “leader in Java application infrastructure and management.” The plan is that by introducing SpringSource tcServer Spring Edition it will unequivocally be “the best place to build and run Spring applications.”
Server Spring Edition aims at providing a lightweight platform for running applications. It’s tailored for virtualized datacenters but also for cloud services, both internal and external. SpringSource is also trying to “bridge the divide” between developers and IT operators, by providing them with tools for management of application health, quality and all that jazz. (For a little more info on the Spring-framework, you can read the wiki.)
To honor the launch, there’s a new promotion. Dubbed the “Spring on VMware Promotion” licenses of the Server will be offered for free for a limited time only, and with the sale of a qualifying VMware product. Also worth noting: this is the first time that SpringSource solutions are available through the VMware channel.
A little background; SpringSource tcServer is based on Apache Tomcat. SpringSource says that means there’s better developer productivity, operational control and deployment flexibility for building and deploying Spring apps. That also means that customers can reduce the delivery time for new applications. Of course, the lightweight footprint means it’s easy on resources, and cloud-friendly. What’s more, this new version makes has been built to make it easy for customers currently running Spring applications on Java EE servers to migrate to tcServer Spring Edition.
“Not only is tc Server Spring Edition the best place to run Spring apps but it is ideally architected for next-generation data center technologies…Our customers have proven that to deploy applications properly in virtual environments, the application server must require a very small footprint. In this way, tc Server Spring Edition is ideal for virtual deployments which are the onramp to cloud computing.” Shaun Connolly, vice president of product management for the SpringSource division of VMware.
And the key features of tcServer Spring Edition? There’s a lot, and SpringSource says tcServer “harmonizes the application lifecycle” with them. Here’s a few noted in the press release:
Enhanced build and deploy process through integration with Maven
Agile Spring development experience with SpringSource Tool Suite designed to speed the code / test cycle and ability to find underperforming areas of your applications
Performance and SLA management of Spring applications provides the top-down insight required to help ensure applications are operating as expected
Group availability and event dashboards make it easy to see the problem areas and possible root causes of issues
Template-driven server instance creation enables multiple application server instances per machine to be configured and deployed in a matter of seconds
Integrated experience with VMware Workstation and Lab Manager enables applications to be easily deployed and debugged within encapsulated virtualized environments
Open, secure API for all operations ensures system administrators have access to the operational capabilities they need using the scripting tools they are familiar with
SpringSource tc Server 2.0 is coming early April 2010 with three package deals: The Spring Edition, which starts at $750 per CPU, Standards at a $500 a CPU, and of course, Developer Edition which is completely free to download as part of the SpringSource Tool Suite.
