Symantec Endpoint Protection: MR3 Could Be the Charm

Symantec Endpoint Protection was supposed to be a game-changing security solution. Instead, some critics considered it a bloated memory hog. Still, The VAR Guy hears Symentec Endpoint Protection Maintenance Release 3 (MR3) addresses the performance issues that plagued some customers.
In an email to The VAR Guy, Symantec half-heartedly admits it had a problem on its hands:
“Internet security software is supposed to run unobtrusively in the background but can hog CPU cycles and memory. This causes too many organizations … to fight performance and memory footprint bottlenecks. Symantec looks to address those issues with its latest update to its Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 software.”
Translation: The original Symantec Endpoint Protection product was bloated. Now, Symantec is looking to make amends with MR3. The company claims MR3’s “significant” improvements to client and server performance include:
Reducing the memory footprint to 30 MB while the client is running
Shortening boot time to 100 seconds on a 256 MB RAM machine and to only 10 seconds on a 2 GB RAM machine
Optimizing individual SEP server functions by up to 1,000 percent
Um, one side note: For those of us running Mac OS X and Linux, we’re used to even 10-second boot times without running any distracting security code. How the Windows world puts up with 100-second boot times is beyond The VAR Guy.
Still, it’s good to see Symantec coming back into the market to address earlier concerns with Symantec Endpoint Protection.
