Knology Enhances Service Offering
October 8, 2007
Knology Inc. (Booth 728) announced it has enhanced its point-to-point Ethernet service and high-capacity Internet connectivity.
Knologys enhanced Metro Ethernet service solution delivers high-speed, optical, point-to-point Ethernet transport through dedicated connections that are transparent between locations. They are designed to move data traffic between major data aggregation points in a given geographic area, explained Knology. Knology Metro Ethernet Private Line offers an Ethernet interface at the 10/100/GigE signal rates with a security option.
Also called Active Ethernet solution, Knologys architecture delivers service over a point-to-point connection that does not split bandwidth between users. Consequently, it delivers higher bandwidth to end users regardless of how many broadband subscribers there are in a given area, said the company. Metro Ethernet runs at gigabit rates, based on established standards, and is used for point-to-point connectivity or to connect into a customer facility and transport high-capacity Internet traffic to the public Internet.
The Metro Ethernet services support the IEEE Ethernet standard, allowing interoperability between different vendors equipment without the need for adjustments or interoperability tests. Since Ethernet does not involve any proprietary technology, equipment used with Knologys Metro Ethernet services can be added from various manufacturers.
With active Ethernet, each subscriber is connected by a dedicated fiber to the Ethernet aggregation switch, assuring bandwidth is not shared between users. Knologys Metro Ethernet service delivers speeds up to 100mbps, 1gbps or as much as 10gbps to each end user.
Traffic running over its Metro Ethernet solution is pure IP, simplifying design, deployment, management and maintenance. No protocol conversion is required, and network management of all network elements as well as billing and authentication is simplified.
