Vonage Holdings Corp. said Monday that one of its subsidiaries, Vonage Network Inc., has signed a three-year contract with EarthLink Inc. to offer customers Wi-Fi Internet access in selected cities.

Vonage will buy Internet access on a wholesale basis from EarthLink in the cities where that company will build, own and operate municipal wireless networks. Vonage will then resell Wi-Fi Internet service to its consumers.

EarthLink has been awarded Wi-Fi contracts in Philadelphia, Anaheim, Calif., Milpitas, Calif., and New Orleans.

Later this year, Vonage plans to provide hardware, such as a wireless modem device, and other software tools to customers who will be using the service as an alternative to DSL or cable modem Internet access. Other services and devices, such as a Vonage Wi-Fi phone, are planned.
