After weeks of garnering world attention as a fugitive in hiding, antiviral software guru and serial blogger John McAfee was arrested in Guatemala on Wednesday for entering the country illegally.

McAfee’s saga, which he dutifully detailed on his blog and through regular dispatches to media outlets, began Nov. 11, when he went on the run after learning that he was a person of interest to Belizean authorities in the shooting death of his neighbor and fellow expatriate Gregory Faull, whose body had been discovered the previous day.

McAfee was traveling with his girlfriend as well as VICE magazine editor-in-chief Rocco Castoro and photographer Robert King who were recording McAfee’s life on the run for a full-length documentary, NBC News said. Although an iPhone photo of McAfee and Castoro posted by King contained metadata that revealed the group’s location, McAfee was not arrested until he surfaced in Guatemala City.

The Associated Press reported that prior to his arrest in Guatemala, McAfee had requested asylum. He entered the country from Belize, where he said he feared for his safety because he has sensitive information about official corruption and had refused to donate to local politicians.

Police in Belize deny they are persecuting McAfee and say there is no warrant for his arrest. The country’s prime minister has even questioned McAfee’s mental state.

After being arrested, McAfee asked for and received a computer, which he used to update his blog from his cell.

While McAfee’s request for a computer was granted, his request for asylum was denied and he is expected to be returned to Belize, where officials are waiting to question him about Faull’s murder.
