Symantec Launches NetBackup 7.5, Backup Exec 2012

When Symantec isn’t protecting mobile devices, it’s focusing on its core with Symantec NetBackup 7.5 and Backup Exec 2012. Naturally, The VAR Guy has the quick rundown on Symantec’s latest iteration of backup and security technology …

The top features of Symantec NetBackup 7.5 and Backup Exec 2012 are as follows:

  • Backup, Fast: Symantec has gone out of its way to ensure NetBackup 7.5 is faster than it’s predecessor, and according to Symantec, it’s up to 100 times faster. NetBackup also features NetApp Snapshots for super-quick retrieval of important files that may be useful for “legal holds” or less litigious data retrieval.

  • New Management: Backup Exec 2012 arrives with a new management console and Symantec is proud. The company is boasting a dashboard makeover that sets “a new standard for intuitive design.” Okay, but what about usability? Apparently, Symantec had “more than 1,000 partners” on board with Backup Exec 2012 beta to ensure that Symantec’s new console would be in tip-top shape. Both physical and virtual devices can be managed with the new console and Symantec promises as much “reduced complexity” as possible.

  • NetApp Integration: Thanks to NetApp and Symantec’s continued relationship, NetBackup Replication Director is now natively integrated, allowing IT admins to target key areas that require super-quick snapshot-style backup and retrieval of data without mucking about in backups you don’t need.

  • Virtualization- and Cloud-Friendly: If you’re leveraging vSphere 5.0, BackupExec 2012 comes VMware Ready and supports Storage vMotion, vSphere Storage DRS and a whole lot more. Major cloud backup storage offerings from Amazon, AT&T, Nirvanix and Rackspace are supported by NetBackup, too.

Craving some more Symantec? Be sure to also check out Symantec’s continued relationship with VMware and  Symantec’s special protection for Samsung’s Galaxy line of mobile phones.
