What MSPs Can Learn from the Q2 Global Security Report

Ransomware and phishing attacks threaten businesses of all sizes, according to AppRiver’s Quarter 2 Global Security Report. The security company quarantined 4.2 billion malicious emails in its second quarter—up from 2.4 billion in its first quarter. The uptick in malicious traffic is due to the widespread availability of botnets, such as the infamous Necurs botnet, which have made malware attacks profitable for organized crime groups looking to fund their activities.

While many businesses may think that cybercriminals only target “the big guys,” the reality is that these cast-net style approaches take much less effort and can be as profitable as a big data breach. And a ransomware attack demanding thousands of dollars–lest you lose your files forever–can ruin a small business. So that begs the question, “What can MSPs do to protect their clients from malware?”

MSPs need to offer a suite of affordable, easy-to-use cybersecurity products, such as email filtering, Web protection and email encryption. The easier it is use–such as held mail reports delivered directly to your inbox, the ability to send encrypted email from an app on your phone or button within your inbox, and “set-it-and-forget-it” Web policies–increase the chances of your customers successfully thwarting malware attacks. While there is no one “silver bullet” to protect your customers, offering them a layered security suite is the most likely way to keep their networks—and wallets—safe.
