Windstream is taking action to defend itself against an email scam targeting its customers.

Customers began reporting the scam on Thursday, Windstream spokesman Scott Morris said.

“Our Internet security group is aware of this scam,” Morris said in an email when asked about a report warning of the scam. “Our spam filters have been updated to protect windstream.net email customers, and we’ve alerted our helpdesks so they can assist customers who call in with questions.”

Windstream also has posted a notice on its security website, www.windstream.com/security. Windstream cautions that customers have received fraudulent emails purporting to be from Windstream’s billing department and concerning 401K information.

“These are FRAUDULENT e-mails and should NOT be responded to or any links clicked on,” Windstream warns in the notice. ” If you receive this e-mail, please forward it to [email protected] and delete it immediately. Windstream Spam Filters have been updated to stop delivery of this e-mail.”
