Verizon Wireless will use network equipment, software and services from Alcatel-Lucent for its network expansion.

The three-year deal is worth $6 billion, the companies said Monday.

The products from Alcatel-Lucent will help Verizon Wireless increase the coverage and capacity of its wide-area broadband data network. The carrier also will introduce new A-IMS services including VoIP, push-to-talk and mobile video telephony.

Verizon Wireless said the upgrade further will make the systems interoperable with multiple vendors. It also will update its existing Alcatel-Lucent packet switches to support IP soft handoff and transcoder free operation; the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router will provide IP routing and Ethernet aggregation.

Verizon additionally will use various products from Alcatel-Lucents optical and wireless transmission line, including MDR 8000 digital microwave radios.

Alcatel-Lucent is providing complete network support services, from integration to installation, repair and maintenance.
