Doctors say a 63-year-old AT&T employee will survive a mugging that left her with a gunshot wound to the head.

Linda Self and a co-worker were walking from their bus stop early one morning to AT&T’s Dallas headquarters when they were accosted by a man who demanded Self’s purse. She refused to hand it over multiple times. When he said “I’ll shoot you,” Self replied, “Well, shoot me.” And then he did, in the head. Fortunately, the bullet didn’t go through.

“It just wasn’t my time,” Self told the NBC station in Dallas-Fort Worth. “I probably was wrong in not giving him my purse … but … I’ve lived too long and worked too hard [to deal with someone] trying to make a living [like this].”

This is one of four similar muggings in the Dallas area this week, but Self is the only victim to have been shot.

She admits, in hindsight, it would’ve been better simply to hand over her purse.
