Broadwing Corp.s CEO Dr. David R. Huber addresses CompTel/ASCENT 04 attendees today on the evolution of the communications industry and how service providers must adapt.

“Telecom companies have been forced to choose between three paths in this challenging marketplace: evolution, revolution or dissolution, says Huber in an advance copy of his remarks. As founder of equipment providers Ciena and Corvis, I [have] had a unique opportunity to witness the difficult decision making process telecom service providers [have gone] through during the telecom winter and how those decisions impacted the future of their businesses.”

Dr. Huber has more than 20 years of experience in the development of optical communications systems. Serving as chairman and CEO of Broadwing Corp. (formerly Corvis Corp.) since its inception, he has successfully managed the evolution of Corvis from advanced optical communications equipment vendor to telecom services provider.

Huber states that while the telecom environment is characterized by rapid change, customer requirements from service providers have remained basically the same minutes for voice, connectivity for data and support for emerging technologies. The challenges, meanwhile, are the impact of regulatory decisions and price erosion.

Despite these challenges, telecom services industry is an irresistible opportunity, says Huber. The key to success in the sector, he advises, is to stabilize your business, invest in your systems and deliver 360-degree network services to ensure success of your customers businesses.
