The general public now can register domain names ending with .mobi, a top-level domain dedicated to delivering Internet content to mobile devices.

The domain was created by mTLD Top Level Domain Ltd. (dotMobi) to designate sites which are made for mobile, with content tailored to fit the third-screen format. dotMobi has established best practices, style sheets, standards and tools in an effort to make the wireless Web experience consistent and easy to use, for consumers and site designers. To make creating Web sites for mobile Internet functional and reliable, the dotMobi Switch On! Guide for Web Development contains rules and best practices based on open standards. The dotMobi Switch On! Guide ensures Web sites can be viewed and navigated by any mobile phone.

In the past, using the Internet on a mobile device presented huge obstacles for the consumer,” said Neil Edwards, CEO of dotMobi. “We’re creating a link between mobile operators, Internet content providers and the millions of mobile users seeking a consistent, reliable and enjoyable Internet experience.”

General registration for the site began with a landrush last week, and will be followed by Standard General Registration on Oct. 11.

Just over 13,000 .mobi domain names had been claimed prior to the landrush period when registration was opened to wireless companies in May, and opened in June for companies with trademarks. Since last week, that number has been in the hundreds of thousands.
