Hitachi Now Owns Some Nortel Next-Gen Properties

Hitachi is now the proud owner of Nortel Networks’ next-gen packet core network assets.

The $10 million deal, announced in October, includes certain wireless data-transfer software, some equipment and a non-exclusive license of some patents and other intellectual property. It does not include legacy packet core components for Nortel’s UMTS and GSM businesses.

Regulators and bankruptcy officials in the United States and Canada have approved the sale.

Meanwhile, Nortel also said on Tuesday it has hired John Ray as its principal officer of U.S. debtors. That’s a fancy way of saying Ray will oversee Nortel’s debtor obligations in the United States throughout the bankruptcy proceedings. His appointment still must get approval from judges in the United States, though.
