PayPal Founder Unwitting Player in ACORN Sting
September 22, 2009
PayPal founder and Facebook investor Peter Thiel helped fund the now-infamous ACORN sting that’s been all over the Internet.
However, Thiel insists he didn’t know how activists James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles were using the grant money. Thiel previously gave O’Keefe $10,000 for another project, according to a new investigation by the Village Voice.
For the ACORN sting – in which O’Keefe and Giles dress as a pimp and prostitute and get tax advice, some involving illegal sex workers – O’Keefe used money from “Taxpayers Clearing House” that was provided through an unidentified small government group. Thiel said he had no involvement with the ACORN work but, after watching the video on the Internet, said he “shares the view that taxpayer money should not promote human trafficking.”
Social services group ACORN stands to lose all of its government funding because of the sting operation.
