Ahoy, matey – I see land(line loss). But it isn’t time to jump the wireline ship. Even though 920,000 Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) access line users put their service out to sea in the second quarter, the carrier reported higher earnings and sales. It’s also, ahem, ‘shoring’ up its FiOS TV base. Granted, the number of new FiOS subscribers sank far below what analysts predicted, so there’s work to be done there. The good news for Verizon – which stands to become the largest wireless service provider if the Alltel deal goes through – is, of course, wireless. The company ‘netted’ more new customers than rival AT&T Inc. (T) and the Verizon Business unit is sailing away with enough high-dollar booty to turn a pirate green.

Apologies. This blurb went a little ‘overboard.’
