Ransomware attacks jumped almost 93% year over year. Attacks totaled nearly 2,700, compared to fewer than 1,400 in 2020.
The NCC Group’s Ian Usher made our list this week for his insights into Conti, a Russia-based global threat actor, who represented 18% of all ransomware attacks.
Usher said of the group: “What we identified was an operation being run very much like a business enterprise, with thorough recruitment and training processes. This material did not reveal any novel techniques or procedures, so the prominence can only really be attributed to the scale of the operation, which is made possible by the business model.”
His perspective couldn’t be timelier.

Sometimes slow and steady wins out. That’s the approach Kyndryl and AWS took in developing their new partnership, the final one in Kyndryl’s public cloud pipeline. Chris Niederman, general manager, AWS global accounts and systems integrators, made this week’s list for outlining the nature of this partnership and the steps it took to get it to fruition.
“We have been in discussions with Kyndryl for quite some time and wanted to take the time to get it right for our customers and Kyndryl versus rushing to bring something to market that isn’t fully fleshed out and [as] impactful for our customers as we believe it can and should be,” Niederman told Channel Futures.

Deep Instinct has tapped Mike Saletta as area vice president of Americas channels. He made Channel People Making Waves for his long track record of holding various leadership positions over nearly 25 years in the technology business. Saletta will primarily focus on alignment, enablement and demand generation for Deep Instinct’s partners.
“The key to our channel success in fiscal year 2023 and beyond will be based on our ability to help our partners, and ultimately their customers, see how much more efficient and effective deep learning is at stopping ransomware and other malware versus machine learning,” Saletta said. “Extended detection and response (EDR) is just not enough to properly protect a customer’s environment.”

IBM acquired Microsoft cloud partner Neudesic. The terms of the deal, announced this week, were not disclosed.
However, IMB consulting senior VP John Granger did disclose the Neudesic deal builds on several acquisitions IBM Consulting has made over the past two years. They include Sentaca, SXiQ, BoxBoat, Nordcloud and Taos.
“Neudesic adds deep Azure cloud, data engineering and data analytics expertise to accelerate our clients’ hybrid cloud journeys,” Granger wrote on LinkedIn.

Ericsson attempted to clear the air this week by revealing the findings of an internal investigation. Ericsson improperly partnered with sales agents and consultants in Iraq, not to mention potentially bribing ISIS.
Ericsson CEO Börje Ekholm made the Week for his candor.
“What we are seeing is that transport routes have been purchased through areas that have been controlled by terrorist organizations, including ISIS,” Ekholm told a Swedish newspaper earlier this week.
However, a law firm is investigating false or misleading statement the company might have made. It’s not the only organization investigating the Ericsson. To read more from James Anderson’s story, link here.
There’s no doubt that Google Cloud has undergone a lot of changes since the beginning of this year. Our Kelly Teal got the scoop from Google Cloud’s Jim Anderson, managing director of the North America partner ecosystem and channels. He also discussed the future of the channel at the company.
For instance, Anderson said:
“Demand from customers has soared, and our partners want to work with us to address this opportunity. Moreover, our partners want to be strategic, long-term business partners for customers — not just a one-time reseller. To that end, we’re very focused on supporting partners who are delivering key services to customers, like migration services or managed services. We’re also investing heavily in supporting our partners, including doubling our spend on partners in the next several years.”

Our weekly Channel People Making Waves counts down the top stories of the past seven days. We highlight the individuals behind the stories, this week featuring Upstack, Ericsson, Deep Instinct, More.
Surprisingly, no M&A made the Week. Maybe there’s a cooling down of all that global activity? However, what we did highlight was an individual who could comment on ransomware attacks coming out of Russia. It goes without saying that this is a critical issue considering the current international climate.
As for the No.1 most-read story on our list, it’s an ode to the channel showcasing the best and brightest in the industry. However, there were two individuals we selected as co-channel influencers of the year, CEOs from two companies whose growth has flourished this last year.
And, finally, in case you didn’t catch last week’s roundup, you can find it here.
