Dropbox Adds New Features to Android App

Dropbox wants its Android users to view files right on its platform without having to toggle back and forth between screens.

Announced in a company blog post, the San Francisco-based cloud file sync-and-share company this week released two new features for its Android app.

The first new feature enables users to preview Word documents, PowerPoint presentations or PDFs from within the Dropbox platform. Now users no longer have to switch to another app to view a file.

But Dropbox didn’t stop there. It also “gave the search experience on Android a massive facelift — so you can get to your files even faster.”

New search features include: scoping of searches, track recent searches, type-ahead suggestions and highlighting of search terms.

This release also makes it possible for users to set view-only permissions on shared folders — available now for Dropbox for Business teams.

The new release is now generally available to users in the Google Play Store for download.

In separate news, Dropbox in June acquired MobileSpan, a Santa Clara, California-based technology company focused on transitioning enterprises to a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) world.

Dropbox in April received $500 million in debt financing from QueensBridge Venture Partners. The company has raised a total of $1.1 billion since 2007.
