Friday's Last Word: Looker CEO Frank Bien
Looker CEO Frank Bien joined the Santa Cruz, California-based inventive software company in 2013 after more than 20 years of experience in technology. Before joining Looker, Bien was senior vice president of Strategy for software-defined storage vendor Virsto (which was acquired by VMware) and vice president of Strategic Alliances at EMC. Bien worked as vice president of Business Development Greenplum before it was acquired by EMC. Here's what he's like outside of the office.
BIEN: I love almost all music. I saw a great San Francisco band called Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers.
TALKIN' CLOUD'S SPIN: Need someone to see this summer in California? Nicki Bluhm and the Gamblers are touring.
BIEN: Embarrassed to admit it, but I took my teenage boys to see "Spy" this week. It was stupid and incredibly hilarious.
TALKIN' CLOUD'S SPIN: Is Melissa McCarthy ever in anything that isn't funny?
BIEN: 1994 Ford F-150 Long Bed 4×4. My kids call it "the badass truck." Great for hauling junk around.
TALKIN' CLOUD'S SPIN: A piece of American steel.
BIEN: "True Detective" because it was just plain odd.
TALKIN' CLOUD'S SPIN: Odd is good.
BIEN: My wife was an English Lit major so there's a great flow of books through the house. "The Hangman's Daughter" was probably the last, although I really enjoyed "Two Years Before the Mast" recently. It's one of the earliest written descriptions of California.
TALKIN' CLOUD'S SPIN: Sounds like there's a massive library at the Bien household.
BIEN: Looker is based in Santa Cruz, so water is a big thing. Picked up a new stand up paddle board; went carbon fiber. Tech is everywhere.
TALKIN' CLOUD'S SPIN: That's one way to stay in shape.
BIEN: If the bar isn't crowded, a Sazerac. If it is, just rye and soda.
TALKIN' CLOUD'S SPIN: Might be worth ordering at the bar — let's hope it's empty.
BIEN: "Intergalactic" by the Beastie Boys came on the radio on the drive into work — had to turn it up.
TALKIN' CLOUD'S SPIN: Seven platinum or better albums from 1986 –2004.
