VMware Job Cuts Mean Pink Slips for Hundreds of Workers

VMware job cuts have impacted more than 300 employees this month as part of the company’s latest workforce rebalancing.

VMware’s global workforce totals 33,000, so it’s still less than 1%; still, no consolation for those now out of work.

A VMware spokesperson confirmed the cuts, but pointed out that the number is much lower than the 1,600 openings posted on its website.

“This is a part of regular workforce rebalancing that ensures resources across VMware’s global businesses and geographies are aligned with strategic objectives and customer needs,” the spokesperson said. “We have an active employee support program to ensure, where possible, all impacted employees find new positions in VMware or outside of the company. We continue to recruit in areas of strategic importance for the company.”

Last August, several VMware channel execs were among the nearly 150 employees who lost their jobs as part of a regular workforce rebalancing.

That followed more than 200 California-based employees losing their jobs last April as part of another workforce rebalancing.

The latest VMware job cuts arrive amid top leadership changes.

VMware also is losing its CEO. Pat Gelsinger, the company’s CEO for more than eight years, joins Intel next month as its new chief executive. Intel’s first CEO, he began his career and spent 30 years there.

VMware has named Zane Rowe, its chief financial officer, as interim CEO. The company also recently lost its chief operating officer, Rajiv Ramaswami, who now is Nutanix’s CEO.
