The cloud backup and disaster recovery (BDR) services market could prove to be a profitable space for cloud services providers (CSPs) in 2016. Here are seven reasons CSPs should enter the cloud BDR services market next year.
A CSP that wants to stand out in a crowded, highly competitive cloud services market can offer BDR services to differentiate itself from rivals. And ultimately, becoming an expert on BDR services enables a CSP to serve as a trusted advisor as well. "Simply taking backups is one thing; showing a client how this works is another," BDR solutions provider StorageCraft wrote in a blog post. "Equipping yourself with more knowledge about backup and DR is the best way to increase the profit you get from these types of services. There's a lot to learn, but the more you know, the easier it is to have meaningful conversations."
Looking for an effective way to expand your operations? A CSP that enters the BDR services market could extend its reach quickly, particularly if this sector continues to grow. In fact, a recent survey from The 2112 Group and Business Solutions Magazine of 350 IT services professionals revealed BDR was the best-selling cloud service for 56 percent of respondents.
A Nov. 2014 survey from Axcient and Dimensional Research showed that the majority of IT professionals recognized the value of cloud-based BDR offerings, but most respondents said they were not currently using these solutions. As such, a CSP that enters the BDR services market could deliver offerings that meet the needs of businesses across the globe.
Adding BDR services to your portfolio can help a CSP drive demand for some of its other services as well. "[You can] drive demand with the way you decide you package your offering," Ben Austin, senior content marketing manager at remote monitoring and management (RMM) and BDR software provider Continuum, wrote in a blog post. "Consider what packaging style makes the most sense for you and your customers, and make sure you are accurately aligning the pricing of each package with your messaging around your value proposition."
A CSP can make a positive first impression with customers and prospects if it can deliver BDR services successfully. Austin pointed out that offering BDR services can help a CSP make a positive first impression with customers too. "First impressions are everything," he wrote. "To maximize your chances of success, you can't just throw your new offering up on your website, kick off a massive advertising campaign and cross your fingers. Take the time to set up and follow a structured go-to-market strategy program."
Downtime can put a company, its employees and its customers at risk. Therefore, businesses of all sizes require dependable BDR services to avoid this problem altogether, along with the dangers associated with it. "Complete protection and recovery is imperative for all companies, regardless of size," Diane Hagglund, Dimensional Research's senior research analyst, said in a prepared statement. "Given the staggering complexity and limitation of traditional on-premise backup and recovery solutions, there is clear value in fully transitioning to a single, comprehensive cloud-based solution."
Expect the cloud BDR services market to grow over the next few years. For example, The 2112 Group and Business Solutions Magazine noted that the cloud storage market could be worth $46.8 billion by 2018. And as this sector expands, the demand for cloud BDR services could increase. "Although cloud-based backup and recovery is still early in adoption, the recovery market is ripe for innovation, and cloud is the next frontier. I look forward to seeing how this market grows in the coming years," Hagglund added.
