Security specialist Bitdefender is taking on the cloud market with the release of Cloud Security for Endpoints by Bitdefender, a new security-as-a-service offering for both customers and service providers. The goal with this offering, according to Bitdefender, is to provide similar functionality to an on-premises security deployment.

According to the press release, Bitdefender’s endpoint solution hits all the major high notes of a modern cloud security product: it’s manageable from the central Cloud Security Console; it’s invisible to users even in mid-scan; it requires no input; it boasts antivirus, antispyware, antiphishing, trojan/rootkit protection and a two-way firewall; and it’s built on the Bitdefender Gravity Architecture, which means it can be deployed from virtual containers on a turnkey basis, boosting scalability.

And, of course, Bitdefender hyped that, because it’s a cloud solution, IT staff never has to handle updates or anything. The console includes compliance, reporting and other analytics features, boosting its value proposition to heavily security-minded organizations. In short, according to Bitdefender, Cloud Security for Endpoints is everything to everyone.

But there’s nothing in Bitdefender’s press release that indicates it’s a major advance or differentiator from the kind of cloud security Trend Micro or Symantec provide their customers. Regardless, Bitdefender does have a channel play in place, and perhaps its cloud service provider partners feel differently.
