What are your customers’ technology priorities for 2013?  If your managed service provider company is targeting companies large enough to have CIOs, a new report from Gartner (NYSE: IT) has provided some deep insights into what goes on in the mind of these executives.  The research company surveyed more than 2,000 CIOs to provide a list of top technology priorities for 2013. The good news is that digital technologies dominate CIO technology priorities for the new year. Business intelligence, mobile technologies, and security all made the list of  top 10 technology priorities. Which other areas made the list? Here’s a look.

Enterprises are slowly realizing the strategic importance of IT, however, in order to remain relevant in an increasingly digital world, more needs to be done. Only 43 percent of enterprises understand technology’s business potential, according to CIOs surveyed by Gartner. The survey, conducted in the fourth quarter of 2012, included more 2,053 CIOs, representing more than $230 billion in CIO IT budgets and covering 36 industries in 41 countries.

The Truth About IT Budgets
The survey revealed that IT budgets have remained flat to negative. Respondents have seen this trend since the dot-com bust of 2002. CIOs do not expect anything different from 2013, projecting IT budgets to be slightly down, with a weighted global average decline of 0.5 percent.

The following areas are the top 10 global technology priorities for 2013:

  • Analytics and business intelligence;

  • Mobile technologies;

  • Cloud computing (SaaS, IaaS, PaaS);

  • Collaboration technologies;

  • Legacy modernization;

  • IT management;

  • CRM;

  • Virtualization;

  • Security;

  • ERP applications.

Gartner reported recently that in the fourth quarter of 2012, worldwide PC shipments totaled 90.3 million units, a 4.9 percent decline from the fourth quarter of 2011
