When you compete in a crowded market, you need to find a creative way to rise above the noise. In Cisco Systems’ case, the networking giant has launched the Cisco Global Cloud Index. But what exactly is the index — and what need does it potentially fill for cloud services providers (CSPs) and their customers?

Using the index, Cisco claims that global cloud computing traffic will reach 1.6 zettabytes in 2015 and global cloud traffic will exceed one-third of all data center traffic by 2015. Or put another way: Global cloud computing traffic will have a 66 percent compound annual growth rate from 2011 to 2015, Cisco claims.

Naturally, Cisco hopes customers connect the dots between the Global Cloud Index and IT spending — especially if the index can drive demand for Cisco’s Unified Computing System (UCS). Moreover, Cisco is seeking to drive demand for its cloud partner program — which is designed for cloud resellers, cloud builders and cloud services providers.

I’m always skeptical of vendor-produced research. But Cisco’s methodology seems pretty darn intensive.
