AT&T (T), a Visionary in Gartner's Magic Quadrant, offers a public cloud storage service built on the EMC Atmos cloud storage platform. Gartner said AT&T is focused on helping enterprises move data into the cloud. However, the technology research firm also noted that AT&T is "a price follower with capacity pricing that is high compared with large competitors."
IBM (IBM) acquired private hosting and cloud infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) provider SoftLayer in 2013, which continued BIg Blue's cloud push. Also, CEO Ginni Rometty pointed out that IBM was making "significant progress" in the cloud market earlier this year. Gartner ranked IBM as a Niche Player in its Magic Quadrant and said it expects Big Blue to extend its public cloud storage services market reach as well.
HP (HPQ) unveiled its Helion portfolio of OpenStack–based cloud products and services last May. Meg Whitman, HP's CEO, also announced that her company planned to spend more than $1 billion over the next two years on cloud initiatives. Gartner, meanwhile, pointed out that HP is still relatively new to the public cloud storage services market and named HP a Niche Player in its Magic Quadrant.
Rackspace (RAX), led by CEO Taylor Rhodes, continues to make headway in the public cloud storage services market. Gartner named Rackspace a Niche Player in its Magic Quadrant, pointing out that the Texas-based managed cloud company offers easy-to-understand pricing.
Gartner ranked Google (GOOG) as the sole Challenger in its Magic Quadrant. The technology research firm described Google as "a thought leader in building efficient, distributed data center infrastructures." Google currently offers three cloud storage products, including Nearline Storage that was announced this month.
Microsoft (MSFT) is a public cloud storage services heavyweight. Gartner named Microsoft a Magic Quadrant Leader, noting that the Microsoft Azure cloud computing platform offers tight integration with other Microsoft technologies.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) dominates the public cloud storage services market and has been a major player in the space for eight years. AWS offers public cloud storage services in 10 regions worldwide and "has a proven, well-rounded storage portfolio," according to Gartner. And as a result, Gartner ranked AWS as a Leader in its Magic Quadrant.
