Google App Engine: Cloud SQL Service Boosts Scalability

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) is looking to scale up with its App Engine service. The company has launched its new Google Cloud SQL service, a MySQL-based database that resides in Google's cloud and provides features that help customers meet their own demands for faster access to more data.

Joe Faith, a Google product manager, announced the new service on Google's Enterprise Blog and according to Faith, the new service will give Google customers the ability to work with larger MySQL databases in the cloud in a faster way.

"You want your applications to be fast, even with millions of users. Anytime your user tries to retrieve information from the app or update settings, it should happen instantly. For the best performance, you need faster, larger databases — especially if you have a growing user base to serve," Faith wrote on the Google Enterprise Blog.

Faith noted that Google App Engine was designed to scale, and that seems to be the core message behind the new Google Cloud SQL database service. Available as a free trial until June 1, 2013 with a single Cloud SQL instance with 0.5 GB of storage, the new service was developed to offer customers several features, including:

  • Available storage on Google Cloud SQL of up to 100 GB, which is ten times more than what as previously available to customers.

  • An increased instance size to 16 GB RAM, which is four times greater than the amount of data customers could previously cache.

  • Optional asynchronous replication that provides customers with the write performance of a non-replicated database with the benefits and availability of a replicated one.

  • A choice between US or EU data centers for storing and running data, which is sure to be a hit with companies that are bound by compliancy regulations for their respective countries.

  • Integration with Google Apps Script to make it easy for businesses already running Google Apps to use Cloud SQL. Google customers are able to publish and share data with Google Sheets, add data to Google Sites and create simple Google Forms without the worry of hosting or configuring servers.
