Google is making a play for the large enterprise cloud market with the launch of the Google Cloud Transformation Program, a partner initiative that gives a few high-profile Google Apps Authorized Resellers the ability to offer customers customized cloud solutions on the search giant’s own platform.
While most of Google’s partner efforts have revolved around the Google Apps suite of SaaS productivity applications, the Google Cloud Transformation Program will open the door for these select providers to offer deeper infrastructure and code solutions around offerings including Google App Engine, Google Storage for Developers, Google Apps Script and Google Prediction API.
According to the official blog entry, dated Sept. 30, 2011, Google envisions three possible scenarios for these new offerings:
Cloud-based applications such as websites, mobile apps, social media apps, business process apps and customer-facing web apps built using Google App Engine and Google Apps Script
Predictive solutions such as fraud detection, customer sentiment analysis, and customer churn prediction built using Google Prediction API
Enterprise storage solutions such as storage for applications, data sharing and high-reliability backup built using Google Storage for Developers
Obviously, Google is keeping a watchful eye on the cloud ISV space, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a positive reaction to the Cloud Transformation Program wouldn’t result in a widening of the offering to more and more Google partners.
As for the first lineup of Google Cloud Transformation Program partner participants, it reads like a who’s who in the Google channel: CSC, Cloud Sherpas, Cognizant, Opera Solutions, Razorfish, SADA Systems and TempusNova.
Between them, these service providers have raised millions in VC funding, made impressive showings on the Talkin’ Cloud 50 and moved prominent customers such as Virgin America to the Google Apps cloud. And that’s not to mention the fact that many of these providers apparently were incorporating these products into customer solutions already. So it’s no wonder Google tapped this specific bunch to be its first channel ambassadors outside of SaaS.
Needless to say, TalkinCloud will be watching closely to see if the Google Cloud Transformation Program promotes a significant change in Google’s channel strategy, so stay tuned for more.
