Oracle Government Cloud SaaS Solution Debuts, Following IBM, Dell

Oracle (ORCL) has released a new cloud offering today to provide government customers with multiple service options for moving mission-critical applications to the cloud. Oracle’s offering comes at a time when many big tech companies are pushing cloud services for government customers.

First, let’s take a look at Oracle’s offering. According to the company, Oracle Government Cloud, delivers a suite of cloud applications and solutions geared toward enhancing constituent services and managing operations.

These software as a service (SaaS)-based solutions include: Oracle Service Cloud, Oracle RightNow Policy Automation and Oracle Learn Cloud. The company said infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS) solutions would be coming soon.

Senior Vice President of Oracle Public Sector Mark Johnson said in a prepared statement that Oracle is committed to assisting government agencies with operational efficiency through the cloud.

“We are very excited to meet our public sector customers’ demands for a highly secure, robust suite of cloud solutions built for government,” he said. “The maturity and transparency of the standards-based Oracle Government Cloud will enable agencies to confidently move mission-critical government applications to the cloud without compromising security, performance, or reliability.”

Oracle’s announcement follows on news from other tech giants targeting government cloud services. Dell (DELL) launched Dell Cloud for U.S. Government in June 2013, providing IaaS, PaaS and SaaS to government customers. Two months later, IBM (IBM) announced a government contract with the United States Department of the Interior (DOI), which awarded IBM a 10-year indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract, valued up to $1 billion.

Oracle’s release comes almost a month after IBM’s, but without IaaS or PaaS solutions. Oracle’s release today of SaaS only could also be viewed as a placeholder as the company readies IaaS and PaaS solutions to compete with Dell and IBM as all three companies take their cloud solutions to government customers.

Oracle will host a PartnerNetwork Exchange (Sept. 22 – 26) in San Francisco, Calif. to promote several big themes for channel partners, including Oracle’s cloud strategy, Engineered Systems and the Internet of Things.
