Oracle (ORCL) is positioning Java as the de facto platform for building and managing the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine to Machine (M2M) computing. Toward that end, Oracle claims the Java 8 release (coming in 2014) will help ISVs, OEMs and application developers to more effectively build and manage sensor and embedded solutions. So why should channel partners care? At Oracle OpenWorld 2013, The VAR Guy gathered these answers and insights.

First, the big picture: There are roughly 9 billion devices connected to the Internet. As the number grows to 50 billion devices over the next few years how do you scale the Internet of Things (IoT) — where everyone is connected to anything? The answer goes back to Java Embedded, Oracle insists: You need to write once and deploy many.

At Oracle OpenWorld 2013, The VAR Guy met with:

  • Peter Utzschneider, VP, product management, Java platforms.

  • Chris Baker, senior VP, global ISV/OEM/Java sales.

  • Both executives then presented an IoT panel to the broader media.

Why should channel partners embrace Oracle’s Java and IoT strategies? The key answers, Oracle claims, include the ability to:

  • Differentiate from the competition by delivering M2M solutions that stretch from the device to the data center.

  • Quickly leverage Java in embedded architectures for M2M devices.

  • Manage data unleashed by M2M applications.

Some channel-focused software partners are starting to talk up their own IoT strategies and views. Key examples include ManageEngine, an MSP-focused software company that’s attending Oracle OpenWorld and explaining the Internet of Things opportunity to customers.

Looking ahead, Java 8 will offer a dramatic leap forward for IoT developers, Oracle asserts, by offering more commonality of APIs and better code portability across various devices and device sizes.
