Remote Access Technology Patent Lawsuits: Watch 01 Communique

Again, there’s no cause for panic. But MSPs should keep tabs on patent cases to see if or how the technology they run could be impacted. In the case of 01 Communique vs. LogMeIn, a court recently ruled that LogMeIn must face the 01 Communique lawsuit. (LogMeIn continues to defend itself.) Meanwhile, a somewhat similar case involving 01 Communique vs. Citrix Systems is on hold (Bloomberg offers a quick recap here), and 01 Communique filed a lawsuit against Bomgar in January 2012 (that lawsuit has since been settled through a license agreement).

Of course, patent court cases emerge for a range of reasons. Sometimes patent lawsuits are last ditch efforts to keep companies alive (example: Watch Kodak now, and Research In Motion in the future). But protecting intellectual property, no doubt, is important to anyone navigating the IT market.

MSPmentor is still gathering information about how the 01 Communique legal efforts could potentially play out. Again, no cause for alarm in the MSP community. But I do think these cases are worth watching, since remote monitoring and management are core to the MSP space.
