Good news for Oracle VARs that want to shift some customers into the cloud. The Amazon EC2 cloud computing platform has announced that all products that run on Oracle Virtual Machine (VM) have been certified to run in their environment with full support from Amazon Web Services and Oracle. Here’s the story.

While all Oracle VM applications are supported, the initial Amazon Machine Image (AMI) templates available are for Oracle Linux, Oracle Database 11gR2, Oracle E-Business Suite and Oracle Fusion Middleware technologies. The official Amazon Web Services blog entry indicates that templates for PeopleSoft Enterprise, Siebel CRM, and Oracle’s JD Edwards applications are forthcoming.

As for deployment, customers can apply “standard Oracle partitioned licensing models” on Amazon EC2 without restrictions, according to that same blog entry.

The key advantages of this deal are the same as the key advantages of the cloud. Oracle applications are near-standard in several use cases, and now VARs and other IT professionals can deploy them with reduced TCO and installation time — not to mention the standard Amazon Web Services pay-as-you-go model.
