Dell announced several new additions and expansions to its Wyse End User Cloud Computing portfolio this week during VMworld, as the company looks to make migration and expansion to virtual machine networks easier for its enterprise customers.
Among its new offerings, Dell previewed several endpoint solutions for enterprise users, including the company’s new Intel-based 3000 series thin client, which the company designed to be a viable solution for new enterprise users looking to replace their legacy desktop solutions with thin clients. According to the company, the thin client’s dual-core Bay Trail chip will allow enterprises in expanding markets to begin building their virtual machine infrastructures while giving them flexibility to connect to both new devices and legacy peripherals such as bar code readers and printers.
Dell also revealed new PC over IP (PCoIP) functionality to its 5213 all-in-one thin client, which runs the new Wyse ThinOS virtual desktop operating system within a single monitor. According to Dell, the 5213 is ideal for enterprise users with customer-facing operations such as banks and service desks that want a sleek-looking device while benefitting from PCoIP functionality. The all-in-one, which was released in May, now supports dual-band Wi-Fi and enhanced performance capabilities with 3D graphics and Wyse-designed HD multimedia redirection, according to the company.
Finally, Dell unveiled the quad-core Linux 5000 and 7000 series thin clients for customers looking to integrate their legacy Linux programs into their new VM environments.
For its new end-to-end products, Dell is offering several expanded solutions for the VMware (VMW) Horizon View platform. The new offerings include several “pre-packaged” solutions made up of data center components to endpoints and optimized for desktop virtualization, according to the company. Dell customers can choose from the Wyse Datacenter for Horizon DaaS or the new Wyse Datacenter for virtual SANs (vSANs).
With Dell Wyse Datacenter for VMware Horizon DaaS, enterprises and software providers can deploy their own DaaS within their environment in either a public, private or hybrid cloud setting with the option of paying a monthly fee for the management and monitoring of their end-to-end environment. Additionally, Dell Wyse Datacenter for VMware Horizon 6 delivers Virtual SAN, increased user densities and provides 3D graphic capabilities within a secure, scalable and certified environment, according to Dell.
“All of the products … are really focused on making that migration or expansion of a virtual desktop environment based on VMware even simpler, even more cost-effective and even more ubiquitous to your people and your organization,” said Dan O’Farrell, senior director of Product Marketing at Dell Wyse, in an interview with The VAR Guy. “What’s really happening here is that virtual desktops are going prime time at this point. Its becoming much more of a viable alternative to replace traditional desktops with these virtual desktops so that the life of the IT person becomes much easier and your content is more secure.”
