Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) will get another chance to prove Autonomy‘s value during next week’s HP Discover 2012 conference (June 4-7, Las Vegas). HP Discover, a customer and partner conference, arrives less then one month after HP announced plans for 27,000 layoffs and a leadership change at Autonomy. Acquired in 2011, Autonomy’s latest financial performance apparently didn’t meet objectives in HP’s most recent quarterly results. So what’s next?Despite the financial setback last quarter, Autonomy’s software (both on-premises and in the cloud) could provide some big benefits to HP partners that are seeking eDiscovery, storage and enterprise search capabilities. Also, The VAR Guy is betting (heavily) that HP will begin to connect the dots between Autonomy’s software portfolio and HP’s homegrown software. It’s also a safe bet HP CEO Meg Whitman and Autonomy leader Bill Veghte (replacing Autonomy founder Mike Lynch) will offer some clear updates during HP Discover.

Meanwhile, HP must also address internal challenges between HP and Autonomy. A key example: Roughly 15 to 20 percent of employees, about 250 people, have already left Autonomy since HP acquired Autonomy in August 2011, according to Reuters.
Former HP CEO Leo Apotheker was the main champion behind HP’s decision to buy Autonomy for more than $10 billion last year. But HP’s board ousted Apotheker in September 2011 amid big debates involving HP’s PC and software strategies.
Fast forward to the present, and current HP CEO Meg Whitman has been working overtime to ensure Autonomy’s employees understand their value to HP. Moreover, Whitman has been describing a long-term journey to success, rather than knee-jerk decisions.
That journey will continue at HP Discover. The VAR Guy will be listening closely for Autonomy updates.
