Hundreds of Brocade Communications Systems employees got some grim news smack dab in the middle of the holiday season. They will lose their jobs next month.

The layoffs in San Jose, California, are a result of Broadcom‘s $5.9 billion acquisition of Brocade, which was completed earlier this month. Brocade will operate as an indirect subsidiary of Broadcom and will be led by Jack Rondoni, previously Brocade’s senior vice president of storage networking.

According to the report filed by Broadcom with the California Employment Development Department, 308 workers will losing their jobs in San Jose, with the first workers leaving Jan. 19.

Broadcom said in its filing it isn’t closing any facilities and that certain employees were selected for layoffs. The workers are not represented by a union and can apply for open positions, it said.

A Broadcom spokesperson declined comment.

Broadcom is a semiconductor device supplier to the wired, wireless, enterprise storage and industrial end markets. Brocade specializes in data and storage networking products.

“We are very excited to join the Broadcom team and provide compelling benefits for customers and new opportunities for Brocade’s employees,” Rondoni said just after the deal closed.

In the meantime, Broadcom continues to pursue a buyout of rival Qualcomm.
