Pronouns Matter: Building an Inclusive and Thriving Work Environment
Respecting pronouns is a fundamental way to show respect and acknowledgment of a person’s identity in the workplace.

In today’s diverse and evolving workplace, fostering an environment of inclusivity is more important than ever. Respecting pronouns is a crucial aspect of this effort, ensuring that every employee feels seen and valued. As companies strive to create inclusive cultures, recognizing and respecting the pronouns of all employees − whether they identify as trans, non-binary, or any other gender identity on the spectrum − is essential. This not only supports the well-being of individuals but also drives creativity and growth within the organization.
Respecting pronouns is a fundamental way to show respect and acknowledgment of a person’s identity. When employees feel recognized and validated, they are more likely to be engaged and fulfilled. Conversely, misgendering − intentionally or unintentionally − can lead to feelings of alienation and disrespect, negatively impacting morale and mental health.
Studies have shown that inclusive workplaces lead to higher employee satisfaction and retention rates. According to a 2021 survey by the Trevor Project, 42% of LGBTQ+ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, but those who reported having their pronouns respected by all or most people in their lives attempted suicide at half the rate of those who did not have their pronouns respected.
Additionally, a 2020 report by McKinsey & Company found that companies with more diverse executive teams are 25% more likely to have above-average profitability. Inclusivity in the workplace fosters a culture of innovation and creativity, driving overall company growth.
Creating a safe and inclusive space is something I actively work towards at Fusion Connect. I include my pronouns in my email signature, ask and respect pronouns and identities in meetings, and ensure I use inclusive language when speaking to colleagues or writing processes. This small act of inclusion can make a significant difference in helping everyone feel seen and respected.
On a more personal note, my commitment to respecting pronouns extends to my family. My child uses they/them pronouns, and while I don't always get it right, I strive to ensure they know they are seen and loved. This personal experience has deepened my understanding of the importance of pronouns and the positive impact of feeling recognized and validated. I also work towards inclusivity in my role with the ACW DE&I Committee and during Pride Month hosted a panel discussing this topic which can be found here: Inclusivity: Embracing the Spectrum of LGBTQIA+ in the Workplace.
Creating an inclusive workplace where everyone feels respected and valued is not only the right thing to do but also makes good business sense. By respecting pronouns and fostering an environment of inclusivity, companies can unlock the full potential of their diverse workforce, driving innovation and growth.
