Latest M&A: IBM, Vonage, Nokia, GoTo, Nitel, Ensono, Huntress, More

In a deal worth $6.2 billion, Swedish telecom-equipment giant Ericsson has completed its acquisition of Vonage Holdings Corp. Ericsson’s strategy is to grow its mobile network business and expand into the enterprise market now that it has access to Vonage’s UCaaS, CCaaS and CPaaS offerings.

Nitel has acquired fellow network-as-a-service provider Hypercore Networks. Executives described the companies as similar in many respects, with Hypercore bringing unique international capabilities, network operation center resources and voice services. On the other hand, Nitel provides Hypercore with automation capabilities that will reportedly speed up provisioning.
TSBs have functioned as a key route to market for both Nitel and Hypercore, which both style themselves as channel-only.

IT strategy firm Bridgepointe Technologies has made investments in two more sales agents.
Josh Mitchell and Rick Gerzik, long-time contractors with Bridgepointe, have accepted the title of “partner” with the San Mateo, California-based company. As a result, both have received equity in Bridgepointe, which bills itself as an IT strategy firm that targets enterprise customers.
Additionally, Bridgepointe gave partner equity status to its ninth IT strategist. Bridgepointe’s Kelly O’Neil, who has been contracting with Bridgepointe for multiple years, accepted the investment from California-based Bridgepointe. Bridgepointe has announced a series of deals with high-performing IT strategists in its partner base to further incentivize them. The company’s private equity investment from Charlesbank Capital Partners, announced in January, has fueled the deals.
O’Neil said she will grow her enterprise customer base as a result of the investment.
Global software company N-able has acquired Spinpanel, a multitenant Microsoft 365 management and automation platform built for Microsoft Cloud Solution Providers (CSPs).
A growing number of Microsoft partners and IT organizations across the globe use Spinpanel, founded in 2015 as a spinoff of an innovative direct CSP. A significant majority of N-able partners manage and/or resell Microsoft cloud services for their small and medium enterprise customers. The acquisition will help N-able partners alleviate two macro challenges — labor scarcity and moving to the cloud.

Huntress has acquired Curricula, a story-based security awareness training platform, for $22 million, its largest acquisition to date. It’s Huntress’ second acquisition in less than two years.
Huntress acquiring Curricula adds another layer to its growing managed security platform. It provides an interactive e-learning experience that allows employees to become their own line of defense in the fight against attackers.
Curricula’s channel partner program also includes MSPs, MSSPs, VARs and more.

IBM has acquired Databand.ai, an Israeli-based data observability tools and platform provider.
Poor data quality results in executives making bad decisions, which can impact revenues and profit. Data observability tools are designed to troubleshoot and resolve data quality issues in near real-time. IBM will combine Databand with its Observability by Instana APM and Watson Studio to create a full stack observability offering.

Nokia’s managed services business nests in its cloud and network services division. The business offers network maintenance and data management services to communication service providers (CSPs). This generates about $510 million in annual revenue.

Cerberus Sentinel completed the acquisition of CyberViking, a cybersecurity company based in Georgia and Oregon. CyberViking specializes in application security services, and incident response and threat hunting. It also assists in the creation and management of security operations centers. The company has advised many Fortune 100 companies across the globe.
It’s just one of many acquisitions lately for Cerberus Sentinel, which has been on an acquisition spree. It is expanding its talent and capabilities to help MSPs and MSSPs beef up their cybersecurity capabilities.

Global cloud communications platform Infobip acquired Peerless Network, the VoIP provider. Infobip says the deal allows it to expand its voice offering worldwide, enhancing the U.K.-based company’s presence in the U.S.
Peerless Network’s nationwide voice network covers 98% of Americans across 49 states. In addition, Infobip now offers Peerless Network’s clients access to its communications platform as a service (CPaaS). It helps them broaden their omnichannel capabilities and connect with their customers globally at scale.

Ensono, the Chicago-based hybrid cloud managed service provider, has purchased AndPlus, which bills itself as a cloud and data engineering firm.
The Ensono-AndPlus combination is significant in that it builds Ensono’s cloud and data engineering capabilities, giving customers more firepower for migrating to and operating in the cloud.
One of AndPlus’ notable achievements is that it worked with Bloomberg; the company built a scalable system for the media, and data and analytics giant. Dubbed Bloomberg Vault, the platform delivers unified archiving. Now, AndPlus plans to take its capabilities and apply them through Ensono.

This summer proved there’s no slowdown in deal activity, as our latest M&A addition for July shows. We’ve selected nearly a dozen companies to showcase because their mergers or acquisitions highlighted trends in the market.
Deals in the cybersecurity space stood out, especially for Cerberus Sentinel and Huntress. Both have been on recent acquisition sprees; one will expand talent and capabilities to help MSPs and MSSPs while the other will grow its managed security platform. Find out which one will be doing which.
As for telecommunications/5G, one company is considering selling its managed service business. The proposed deal is a curious one because the business generates half a billion dollars in annual revenue.
