IBM Acquires Catalogic Software's Copy Data Management Business
Catalogic will continue to support ECX with its channel partners for several years.
IBM is buying Catalogic Software‘s Catalogic ECX copy data management business. The move will allow Catalogic to focus on its enterprise and cloud data protection and data security solutions.
That includes CloudCasa, its recently launched Kubernetes and cloud native data protection service. CloudCasa supports all leading Kubernetes distributions, and managed services and cloud database services. In addition, it’s available in cloud marketplaces including SUSE Rancher and DigitalOcean.
The two companies didn’t release financial details of the transaction.

“This agreement has everything to do with accelerating our innovation road map around data protection and copy data management,” he said. “To that end, our business partners will be able to take advantage of this effort, supporting advanced solutions as they’re released.”
The acquisition will have no impact on all existing IBM partner agreements and relationships, Werner said.

“Catalogic will continue to support ECX with our channel partners for several years,” he said. “And many of these partners also sell our flagship DPX product. Some of these partners are also IBM partners and sell IBM Spectrum Copy Data Management, which is a rebranded version of Catalogic ECX that IBM has now acquired.”
IBM Storage has been an important business partner for Catalogic for the last five years, Barth said. It can now integrate these acquired technologies into its storage business.

“Likewise, Catalogic wanted to accelerate and invest more in our cloud data protection products and become a cloud-first data protection company,” he said.
For over 20 years, DPX has been a key product for Catalogic. It allows IT organizations to protect, secure and leverage their data.
“We have a proud history of bringing modern technologies to bear on complex data protection problems such as ransomware protection and recovery to ensure that our customers have the best solution and experience possible,” Barth said. “I am excited about the future of Catalogic with a stronger focus on building our SaaS platform for protecting hybrid and cloud-native environments.”
