Oracle Extends VDI Support to Android Tablets and Windows 8

Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) has introduced Oracle Virtual Desktop Client 1.2 for Android tablets this morning, expanding on the company’s current support for other tablets that include iPad, Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. The client offers Android support, optimized touchscreen interface, faster connections, enhanced user productivity and higher screen resolutions. Here are the details.

The Oracle Virtual Desktop Client software enables access to Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and Sun Ray Software deployments — Oracle’s answer to securing bring-your-own-device (BYOD) initiatives. Oracle Virtual Desktop Client 1.2 includes the following:

  • Android support — The latest support covers Android 4.x tablets, providing Android users the same access to Oracle desktop virtualization deployments as iOS users.

  • Optimized touchscreen interface — On-screen keyboard enhancements enable access to extended keys and maximize the screen viewing area.

  • Faster connections — According to the company, one-click shortcuts to previously connected desktops allows users to easily switch from one virtual desktop to another.

  • Enhanced user productivity — This new addition enables administrators to copy and paste features between the local tablet and remote desktop.

  • Higher screen resolution — The support covers the iPad’s Retina display.

Oracle also announced Oracle Virtual Desktop Client 3.2 for desktop PCs. The solution offers clients support for Microsoft Windows 8 and provides users with the ability to access a broad range of locally-attached USB devices from their virtual desktop environment.

Oracle this week also promoted an infrastructure as a service (IaaS) engineered system (hardware and software) that customers can deploy on premises. The IaaS solution potentially offers opportunities for larger MSPs.
