AT&T Expands Super-Fast Gigapower High-Speed Internet
It turns out that Google doesn’t have the market on lightning-fast Internet speeds. See which cities are slated to get the carrier’s GigaPower.
Google Fiber has received a lot of the headlines for its super Internet speeds in a handful of markets around the country, but AT&T is trying to stay right on the search giant’s heels.
The carrier is expanding its GigaPower network to Charlotte, North Carolina. The service, which allows you to download 25 songs in 1 second, a TV show in 3 seconds and an HD movie in 36 seconds, features broadband speeds of up to 1 gigabit. Residential and small-business television customers can watch and record five HD shows at once. The GigaPower DVR features 1 terabyte of storage.
“In today’s business climate, and especially in the global marketplace of the future, advanced, high-speed communications technology is vital for business success,” said Bob Morgan, president of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber applauds Charlotte’s leaders for remembering the connection between public policies that welcome investment and a great economy. When government and private industry work cooperatively, our community wins.”
Specific locations of availability and pricing in the Charlotte area will be announced later.
AT&T said in April that it would be expanding GigaPower to up to 100 candidate cities across 25 nationwide markets. The carrier launched the U-verse with AT&T GigaPower network to thousands of households in Austin, Texas, and surrounding communities in December 2013 and in January announced it will expand the fiber network to double the households in the Austin area this year as a result of high demand that has exceeded expectations. AT&T will expand the all-fiber AT&T GigaPower network to Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas this summer.
Other cities soon getting GigaPower are Nashville, Raleigh-Durham, Winston-Salem and San Antonio.
