Cohesity Helios Tackles Secondary Data and Apps Globally
Cohesity Helios uses analytics and machine learning to gain insights from untapped data.

Coming on the heels of raising $250 million in Series D funding, Cohesity, the hyperconverged secondary storage vendor, on Tuesday announced Cohesity Helios, a SaaS-based secondary data and app management orchestration and management solution.
The solution is designed to help businesses see, manage and act on their secondary data and applications globally. It uses analytics and machine learning (ML) to generate insights from untapped data.

With this newest member of the vendor’s SaaS portfolio, Cohesity continues its mission of redefining secondary data and apps. Secondary data makes up 80 percent of all enterprise data, with companies having between six and 10 copies of the same data, which creates security, control and management issues.
“Organizations need to start thinking about infrastructure as a platform — hence the Cohesity data platform, Helios. It eliminates the fragmented data and apps, the management complexity, and inefficient data reuse,” Raj Dutt, director of product marketing at Cohesity, told us.

Other Helios features:
A smart assistant: Administrators can define service-level agreements (SLAs) by job and workload and Cohesity SmartAssist will automatically evaluate required versus available resources (i.e. compute and storage) across all clusters to meet SLAs or suggest changes as needed.
Machine learning for operational insights: Helios evaluates how infrastructure is being used and utilizes machine learning to determine the adjustments or modifications that might be necessary in the future. For example, based on current storage utilization and workload makeup, Helios will proactively recommend when additional resources might be needed to continue meeting business requirements.
Peer comparisons: The SaaS solution not only evaluates customers’ operational metadata sets, but also analyzes operational metadata from Cohesity customers globally. Organizations can compare infrastructure utilization against anonymized benchmarks from their peers — and uncover best practices.
“Customers globally are grappling with how to easily manage skyrocketing volumes of secondary data and applications that are spread across silos on-premises and in the cloud,” said Mark Peters, principal analyst and practice director, at Enterprise Strategy Group. “Cohesity Helios gives customers innovative ways to view and manage their global secondary data and applications, making it much easier to accelerate IT productivity, simplify business planning and derive insights from untapped data.”
Cohesity Helios also helps companies with business continuity across their secondary infrastructure with proactive health checks. Helios can examine actions taken by an IT administrator across their sites and send alerts for anomalies that don’t follow best practices — and make recommendations.
At the same time, automation features enable Helios to take proactive actions. The newest offering can conduct “what if” analysis prior to implement any changes across a cluster.
With administrative control from a single console, data across multiple sites can be seen in one central view to maximize agility. The new offer includes the Cohesity Analytics Workbench to derive insights from untapped data in three application areas: ensuring compliance via a pattern finder; using the password-detection application to help mitigate risks; and using the video-compression application to help reduce the size of large media files to optimize space.
