Lynx Photonic Networks today introduced an optical protection switching platform that is both modular and carrier-class a first in the industry, the company said.

Lynx’s new LightLEADER 4000 add-on platform features hot-swappable power supplies (main and redundant); a control module; and an array of protection modules supporting a range of high-availability solutions, such as end-to-end wavelength services protection, DWDM link protection, optical bypass, fiber link protection and equipment protection.

“The vast majority of fiber links from a carrier’s point of presence to an enterprise or campus premise are unprotected today,” said Lynx President Beni Kopelovitz. “Moreover, as a growing number of enterprises are deploying high-rate wavelength services to carry their mission-critical traffic over DWDM transport, there is an increasing demand to protect these services end-to-end with SONET/SDH-like high-availability. The LightLEADER 4000 system is designed to meet these demands.”

The LightLEADER 4000 is installed and managed at either the enterprise/campus premise or the carrier’s PoP over existing network infrastructure.

Key features include support for dual homing, bidirectional protection, extra traffic, channel failure detection (beyond optical performance monitoring) and CLI/SNMP management.

The 1-RU, NEBS/ETSI-compliant LightLEADER 4000 platform supports up to six pluggable units in any combination, allowing operators to increase the number of protected clients on a pay-as-you-grow basis.
