TEOCO Explores the Depths of Transaction Activities With SONAR
March 21, 2006
With ringtones, video, music and games moving onto public networks in greater numbers, service providers such as telcos, cablecos and cellular providers are facing a growing need to manage such transactions. TEOCO Corp. is heeding that call with a new solution it calls SONAR.
SONAR is our deep-dive capability, says John Devolites, general manager of communications and entertainment solutions at TEOCO. Were using it to find things in a place where nobodys looked before or nobody has looked in the same way. Devolites explains that SONAR is able to process a very high volume of transactions quickly to make sure all parties involved get paid at the agreed-upon rate. It also guards against fraud and provides trending data, if the service provider wants it. So you need to look at things granularly, he says.
Last year alone, $600 million in ringtones were downloaded in the United States, Devolites says. Thats a whole lot of online transactions for just one application. Other transactions 10-year-old TEOCO addresses include CDRs, interconnection settlements and video-related events for applications like pay-per-view.
If a service provider delivers 100 million ringtones, for example, the SONAR solution makes sure those ringtones are terminating on active phones; ensures they are billed for correctly; and determines geographic patterns related to ringtone demand to help the service provider manage costs, better market ringtones and better accrue costs, explains Devolites. TEOCO also offers professional services to assist service providers with defining inputs, building reference data and developing custom reports.
The SONAR solution is TEOCOs existing audit software, which is in use at many major telcos, running on a supercomputer with 25-terabytes of capacity from DATAllegro Inc. TEOCO will offer this solution through an ASP model, which will be available starting May 1. Devolites says procedures that would take hours to handle using an Oracle platform take just minutes on this solution.
The service is charged in two, four, six, 10 and higher increments of terabytes. If the customer doesnt use its full load in a given month, they can carry over the extra capacity to the next month, says Devolites.
While TEOCO is targeting various types of telcos as well as cable companies today, it also expects to appeal to content providers, such as the studios, starting next year.
