Cloud-based Email Archiving: Excel Micro Distributes Sonian

Excel Micro, a SaaS distributor, has agreed to offer Sonian‘s cloud powered email archiving and search technology to 3,500 resellers worldwide. And official Excel Micro-Sonian announcement is expected Sept. 18.

Excel Micro is best known as a Google Postini and Google Apps distributor, but the company also has SaaS distribution agreements with ZixCorp, IronPort, McAfee YouSendIt, WebRoot and EXM. Meanwhile, cloud-based emails esecurity and filtering have received a lot of attention in recent weeks, amid Google’s decision to fold Postini capabilities into Google Apps, and ultimately do away with the Postini brand.

Sonian, meanwhile, says more than 10,000 customers already use the company’s cloud-based archiving solution. The company in May 2012 announced $13.6 million in Series C funding. OpenView Venture Partners — which also works with Intronis, an MSP-friendly cloud backup service — was among the investors.  Sonian said it had raised $27 million to date.

That’s impressive. But the email archiving and discovery market are extremely competitive. In addition to traditional players like Symantec eDiscovery, emerging alternatives like Google Apps Vault are now vying for position in the eDiscovery market.
