MSPAlliance Promotes Green IT Certification
The MSPAlliance says it plans to unveil a Green IT certification for managed service providers during the organization's conference next month in Las Vegas. According to an MSPAlliance press release: "As part of its Managed Services Accreditation Program™, this Green IT certification will be based on quantifiable standards driven by several factors, including reduction of power consumption in data centers and offices, increased use of remote management of IT services to reduce carbon emissions, and other recognized Green initiatives."

The MSPAlliance says it plans to unveil a Green IT certification for managed service providers during the organization’s conference next month in Las Vegas.
According to an MSPAlliance press release:
“As part of its Managed Services Accreditation Program™, this Green IT certification will be based on quantifiable standards driven by several factors, including reduction of power consumption in data centers and offices, increased use of remote management of IT services to reduce carbon emissions, and other recognized Green initiatives.”
I have to admit: For most of 2007 I thought Green IT initiatives were mostly hype. And even Level Platforms CEO Peter Sandiford — a Green IT advocate — concedes the industry is filled with noise.
But some managed service providers — such as Tech Networks of Boston — have successfully built businesses around the Green IT movement.
Now, organizations ranging from CompTIA (the Computing Technology Industry Association) to MSPAlliance are striving to educate MSPs about Green IT best practices.
Details about the MSPAlliance’s Green IT certification are sketchy, but the organization is expected to reveal more comprehensive details during the MSPAlliance Managed Services Summit, scheduled for Nov. 5-6 in Las Vegas.
